2008 10 City Protest Pictures
Members and Friends of CareToLive took to the streets in 10 cities across America on May 30, 2008. Why? To continue to tell the story about how some folks at the FDA were busy serving themselves when they were supposed to be serving the people of this great nation. To continue to tell the story about how 30,000 men, today, are in desperate need of a treatment for their prostate cancer, and how the FDA wrongly denied them some help.
The FDA was seriously wrong when it delayed the safe and effective immunotherapy called Provenge, which is for late stage prostate cancer. Here are just a few pictures from each location as friends and members of CareToLive delivered another strong message to the FDA while educating people around the country.
Atlanta, GA
By way of review, here is the story. Every year, 218,890 men get prostate cancer in America. 96,000 of them will advance to late stage. Only one treatment has been approved by the FDA in the last 43 years and it is so toxic, most of the men do not want to take it. Go to www.taxotere.com and read the black warning box!
30,000 of these men die every year in America. The FDA was presented with a treatment option called Provenge. The FDA granted it Fast Track Status because it knew it was a lethal disease and there were no other options. Then the FDA used our tax dollars and made this a public issue by calling for an Advisory Committee. Plus, the FDA granted Priority Review because, once again, it was for a lethal disease and there were no other options.
Chicago, IL
So the FDA brought us into this story. It made us well aware of the unmet need for a terminal disease. We watched as the Advisory Committee panel did indeed advise the FDA.
This panel, selected by the FDA itself, said Provenge is safe by a vote of 17-0. It passed the dreaded Vioxx test. The panel said Provenge shows substantial evidence of efficacy by a vote of 13-4. It passed the Congressional threshhold for approval. And yet, the FDA turned its back on the 30,000 men in dire need and delayed getting the treatment to them. It has been well over a year now. And sadly, three CareToLive members have died while waiting on the FDA.
The FDA brought the public into this story and then shut it out so it could make a decision behind closed doors. The only thing the public got to see were three leaked letters crafted by several at the FDA and NCI to spin this story the way they wanted it. Then we found out the decision was squarely made because of the investments and business relationships of Drs. Scher, Hussain and Pazdur.
Cleveland, OH
CareToLive responded by protesting. And it sent thousands upon thousands of letters to the media and elected officials. Then it filed a Citizens Petition, which the FDA still has not properly responded to as of today.
Dearborn, MI
Next, CareToLive filed a lawsuit. We were denied a fair chance to present our case in court as all the windows, shutters and doors were slammed in our face. On July 29th, the US Court of Appeals will look at how that case was handled. We are hoping for that chance to present our case.
Madison, WI
In the meantime, we took advantage of our right to access information under the Freedom of Information Act. We received some revealing stuff but not all of it. What is the FDA hiding. This is not the way a government agency is supposed to behave. It is supposed to serve the people, answer to the people, and adhere to the law. We want answers. We demand answers.
Maitland, FL
Meanwhile, one out of every six men in the United States will get prostate cancer. The shenanigans of some people at the FDA has slowed the scientific progress to help these men. The citizens of America should be outraged and demand more from our government. It is our tax dollars at work here and we are getting a terrible return on that investment.
New York, NY
Tell your elected officials we want this case investigated, we want the guilty parties brought to justice and we want the suffering men in America to get Provenge now!

MAKE AN 8.5 ” X 11 ” SIGN TO CARRY OR WEAR — Print these pdf’s out or make up your own, glue or tape to a thin piece of cardboard or thick sheet of paper, or print on heavyweight paper and tape or staple back to back to a small stick (ie: piece of molding, yard stick), or put a piece of scotch tape at the top, and make a hole through it and the sign, tie a string to it and wear it. You can encase the signs in a plastic sleeve in case of rain (optional) If you are crafty, make and bring some extras for those who aren’t.
Please consider using some of these 8.5v x 11 signs as they all have www.CareToLive.com on them and we need these to show up in the media pictures so people can find us.
Make a poster for the protest. (More at bottom of page)

NY Protest - Provenge supporters will gather opposite Memorial Sloan Kettering’s main building, located at 1275 York Avenue, between 67th and 68th Streets at 8:30 a.m. for a brief show of solidarity. Following our initial gathering, we will fan out throughout the neighborhood to distribute literature (fliers) concerning the Provenge non-approval travesty. Please keep in mind that besides MSK, NYU’s Weill Cornell Medical Center is also close at hand. We potentially have the opportunity to get information about our concerns regarding Provenge to many people directly involved in the medical field. We will also have a chance to discuss our concerns directly with any MSK people we may encounter as we distribute fliers in the area during the morning and possibly early afternoon.
The rallying point is located in a hospital area, so we cannot chant slogans, have speakers or bullhorns, etc. We cannot block the front door of MSK or even stand next to the front doors with literature. The New York City police department has advised that we CAN stand on the street corners and distribute our material, and engage people in conversation. Our plan is designed to comply with these restrictions.
Public transportation in the form of the NYC subway and bus system is relatively close at hand. The #6 train stops at 68th Street and Lexington Avenue, and it’s about a 4 block walk from there. There is also a bus stop for a bus that goes to the area.
Please email me (Kevin) if you intend to participate. I can provide more details. Also, I need to get an idea of the size of our crowd, both to inform the police department and also to have some idea of how many street corners in the area we can station people at. Needless to say, the more people that can make this event, the greater our impact will be.
